British Police Investigate Cricket Match Fixing
Bookie Mazhar Majeed, who is now reportedly under arrest, said Pakistan captain Salman Butt was involved in the match-fixing and was the ringleader of the scandal in the ongoing fourth Test against England at Lord's.
Four Pakistan players, including captain Salman Butt, gave statements to police over the allegations. In a statement, Scotland Yard said tonight that Mr Majeed had been bailed to appear before police at a future date.
In a dramatic development the Scotland Yard detectives visited the Pakistan dressing room immediately after the third day's play to question the players after a British tabloid's sting operation exposed the alleged nexus between players and the bookies.
The International Cricket Council said it was aware of all the developments and made it clear that the fourth day's play of the ongoing Test will continue as scheduled.
In video footage released by the News of the World, Mazhar Majeed is apparently seen with a pile of money in front of him.
Scotland Yard said yesterday a 35-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud bookmakers and was being held at a London police station.
