Junior Doctors Attack At Kolkata SSKM
Doctors' strike cripples medical services at SSKM Hospital
Junior doctors scuffled with mediapersons at SSKM Hospital late on Sunday while trying to stop the latter from covering the inconvenience faced by patients because of the doctors' ceasework.
Earlier in the day, hundreds of patients were either refused treatment or not attended to at SSKM and Calcutta National Medical College due to ceasework by junior doctors.
Officials said the SSKM hospital authorities initiated a dialogue with the striking junior doctors to persuade them to end the agitation but the stalemate continued with the medicos demanding more security in the hospital premises.
Indefinite strike by junior doctors of the premier SSKM Hospital here continued for the second day today and spread to another state-run hospital in protest against the assault on one of their colleagues even as a conciliatory attempt by authorities failed to end the impasse.
At SSKM Hospital, family members of many patients admitted at the hospital alleged that their kin were not being looked after properly. Several patients were referred to various other hospitals. Patients who had come from far-flung places for treatment and admission, waited on the compound of the hospital for doctors.
The state health secretary, Mr MN Roy, said the matter will be taken up at the academic council meeting and action will be taken against students if they do not withdraw their cease-work.
